A new multifamily residential apartment building in Spokane’s downtown eastside neighborhood announces collaboration with Terrain

Prepares for September Opening – Hard Hat Tours Begin

Spokane, WA – The Warren, located at 206 W. Riverside, a new 139-unit multifamily residential apartment building, will soon open its doors, offering residents the opportunity to live within the burgeoning new neighborhood at the confluence of downtown Spokane and the University District.

With a strong focus on connecting people to the neighborhood and the greater surrounding Spokane area, The Warren was developed with a key focus on local building materials, public engagement through accessible open spaces enhanced by art curated through a partnership with local arts nonprofit Terrain and a biophilic design that highlights the vegetation and wildlife of the region. The Warren seeks to not only embrace the values of the community but also be a participating member of this new and upcoming neighborhood.

“This has been an extraordinary collaboration with the City of Spokane and the Spokane University District,” states, Matt Edlen, co-founder of Edlen & Company, who along with deChase Miksis are the developers on the project. “Early on it was evident that there was a clear commitment to urban growth and housing, while also respecting the historical path of Spokane, reflecting what the future can be for this neighborhood within the eastside.” This new apartment building, the largest in the neighborhood, will offer a new residential experience for those living and moving to Spokane that encourages public engagement, good urbanism, walkability, and the arts.

The Warren, whose name emerged from the natural balance between an immersion in the cultural energy of a city with the opportunity to nest, to burrow in an elegantly designed, sustainable building that is community focused, with a deep respect for the arts, culture, and the environment. Just steps away from local restaurants, coffee shops, live music, and the availability of wholesome, naturally sourced food, The Warren is just a block from Main Street and four blocks north of The Spokane River in Riverfront Park with access to the Centennial Trail. Living in The Warren allows one to engage in and support the downtown community and lifestyle.

The Warren has also developed a cultural collaboration with Terrain commissioning local artist, Jiemei Lin to create a site-specific mural that will emerge as a cultural beacon, celebrating the artistic energy present within the Spokane community. Lin, born in Hangzhou, China, has been designing and executing large-scale public murals in both the pacific and inland Northwest, frequently taking on themes of individual and cultural identity. These murals function like vignettes or moments of stories, inviting the viewer into the scene to imagine possible narratives.

Terrain is also engaging with The Warren to develop a collective narrative of the building and its location commissioning local writers that present a variety of backgrounds, cultural identities, and perspectives. Developing stories via a postcard format to offer multiple voices — both historical fiction and nonfiction highlighting this area of downtown, past, present, and future, the local writers include Jess Walter, Sharma Shields, Inga Laurent, Mark Anderson, Shawn Vestal, Emma Noyes, Donell Barlow, Leyna Krow, Stephen Pitters, Tiffany Midge, Luke Baumgarten, Caleb Mannan, and Krista Yep. Their stories will be displayed throughout the building, encouraging residents to contribute to this ongoing collection of stories with their own interpretations.

“The opportunity to collaborate locally and engage the community on this project aligns with our values as a company, while also reinforcing the importance of investing in the communities in which we work and live,” states Edlen. In addition to our collaboration with Terrain, the branding and design of our materials were developed by local branding and design firm, The Woodshop. Other firms include Spokane-based Bouten Construction and the award-winning architectural firm, GGLO Architects based in Seattle.

The Warren is currently hosting hard hat tours and is scheduled to open this September.
